De roots van de Youngblood Brass Band liggen in de traditionele New Orleans brassmuziek, maar daar gooit de band een extra laag aan grooves bovenop en zo creëren ze een mix van hiphop, drum&b(r)ass en latin. Soms doen ze zelfs een uitstapje naar punk, maar blijven altijd trouw aan funk. Questlove van The Roots is fan van het eerste uur, net als Talib Kweli, waar de jongbloedige brass band zelfs mee samen heeft gewerkt.
