Voorafgaand de concerten van Fela's Day vindt er een tot nadenken stemmend panelgesprek plaats ter aftrap van Fela’s Day 2023. In dit gesprek zal een diaspora panel reflecteren op de huidige turbulenties in West-Afrika. Op deze belangrijke dag herdenken we de geboorte van Fela Kuti en de nalatenschap van Thomas Sankara. Met stemmen uit de diaspora die nauw verbonden zijn met de regio, worden zowel het panel als het publiek uitgenodigd om deze gebeurtenissen te verkennen aan de hand van persoonlijke ervaringen, om open en authentieke gesprekken aan te moedigen. Laten we Fela Kuti en Sankara's dromen van een verenigd continent eren en een toekomst voor ogen zien waar vrijheid geen grenzen kent. Mis deze kans niet om te luisteren, meningen te delen en een zinvolle dialoog aan te gaan voor een beter Afrika.

Fela's Day

Join us this 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟳 at 𝟭𝟴.𝟯𝟬 𝗵𝗿𝘀, for a thought-provoking 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 kicking off 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯, our annual celebration of Fela Kuti’s birthday. This year we not only commemorate Fela Kuti's but also Thomas Sankara's life and legacy. We start the evening with a talk on the relevance of Pan-Africanism today by 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗶 𝗚𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗸𝘄𝘂, the renowned Nigerian illustrator and designer who is best known for his long-standing collaboration with Fela Kuti. He is in Amsterdam for 𝗟𝗲𝗺𝗶 𝗚𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗸𝘄𝘂: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀, an exhibition of his work in Rush Hour Store from November 1-28.

Following the talk, a group of Afrodescendants based in the Netherlands will join Lemi for an 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 to reflect on the 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, such as Niger's struggle for independence and ECOWAS's use of force. Featuring voices from the African diaspora, both the panelists and visitors will be encouraged to explore the events through a personal and intimate dialogue. Let's honor Kuti and Sankara's dreams of a unified continent and envision a future where freedom knows no boundaries.

The panel discussion, organized by 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰, 𝗢𝗺𝗲𝗸 and the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿, will, apart from Lemi, feature the following speakers:

And following the talk and panel discussion, you are more than welcome to stay for the rest of the program, featuring concerts by 𝗞𝗶𝗻'𝗚𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗮 and 𝗕𝗶𝘅𝗶𝗴𝗮 𝟳𝟬, and a theatrical catwalk and afterparty by 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹!

Route naar Tolhuistuin

Tolhuistuin (voorheen Paradiso Noord) is gevestigd aan IJpromenade 2 in Amsterdam Noord. Vanaf Amsterdam Centraal kun je met de gratis veerpont naar de overkant, waar je na links af te hebben geslagen, tegen Tolhuistuin aanloopt. Voor clubnachten wordt de ingang aan de achterkant gebruikt (Buiksloterweg 5C), die te bereiken is via het Overhoeksplein.
