Smokey Robinson is één van de hitschrijvers van het Motown label. Niet alleen schreef hij voor Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, maar ook voor anderen: My Guy voor Mary Wells, Get Ready voor de Four Tops, My Girl voor de Temptations. Zijn laatste nr. 1 hit had hij met Tears of a Clown (1972). Daarna startte hij een solo-carrière. Smokey Robinson komt met een uitgebreide band en 12 strijkers.
