The Love Witch + introduction

Anna Biller directs this horror comedy starring Samantha Robinson, Jeffrey Vincent Parise and Laura Waddell which pays homage to the Technicolor thrillers of the 1960s and 70s. A young and beautiful witch named Elaine (Robinson) uses her magic to devise spells and craft concoctions which will grant her what she desires: a man who loves her. Inconveniently however, her creations work too well and every man she seduces ends up dead. She finally finds the perfect man for her, but her willful desire to feel loved may send her over the edge and into a heady brew of passion, madness and death.  

Introduction: 
The introduction to this screening will be provided by writer Basje Boer, offering insightful perspectives on women’s portrayal onscreen, in relation to the films’ themes of love, power and the occult. 

About Basje Boer: 
In 2022, her essay collection Pose - About how we look and who we play was published by Nijgh & Van Ditmar. Previously, she has written the novels Nulversie (2019, Nijgh & Van Ditmar) and Bermuda (2016, Nijgh & Van Ditmar), and the short story collection Kiestoon (2006, De Arbeiderspers). In collaboration with De Groene Amsterdammer and publisher Das Mag, Boer compiled the anthology Jeugd in opstand (2022).  

Boer's stories have been published in various magazines, including De Gids, Tirade, Das Magazin, Hollands Maandblad, and De Revisor. She has contributed to anthologies such as Vanaf de vluchtstrook (Nijgh & Van Ditmar), Wolf (Atlas Contact), De nieuwe feministische leeslijst (Das Mag), De nieuwe koloniale leeslijst (Das Mag), Meer Oost, Vrouwen schrijven niet met hun tieten, and Handboek voor een optimistisch leven. Additionally, she writes about film and (pop) culture for publications such as De Groene Amsterdammer and the Filmkrant.
