Paradiso presenteert Rocket Cinema @ Museumnacht in De Oude Kerk. Adres: Oudekerksplein 26, Amsterdam.

Rocket Cinema - Old Films, New Music. De Oude Kerk vormt het spannende decor voor vier klassieke, gothische films met geheel nieuwe soundtracks die live worden uitgevoerd. Laat je verbazen door het stuntwerk van Lon Chaney, die in de toren van Notre Dame klimt. Schreeuw mee met Maureen O’Hara tegen de verschrikkelijke klokkenluider en geniet van het solo-optreden van Steven Severin die oog in oog staat met Vampyr. En: dans met een koptelefoon op, tijdens de dj-battle in de Metropolis Silent Disco.

AV mash-up van drie verschillende versies van The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Smoke Eaters zijn audiovisuele kunstenaars en dj’s Simon Melia en Paul Jay. Zij gebruiken elementen uit 100 jaar populaire cultuur en remixen en re-editen dit met dance muziek, als een soort moderne popart.

21.00 – 21.30 uur: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (VS, 1923) vs Geerten Liefting
Geerten Liefting begeleidt een korte versie op het orgel van de Oude Kerk.

21.45 – 23.00 uur: Vampyr (DL, 1931) vs Steven Severin
Steven Severin is een Engelse muzikant, componist en mede-oprichter van de legendarische band Siouxsie And The Banshees. Met zijn nieuwe soundtrack voor Vampyr toert hij door binnen- en buitenland.

Metropolis Silent Disco (doorlopend)
Een estafette waarbij verschillende dj’s de strijd aangaan om de beste nieuwe soundtrack te maken voor de legendarische film Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927). Voor dit programma deelt de organisatie koptelefoons uit waarmee de verschillende soundtracks beluisterd kunnen worden. Er mag zeker gedanst worden met DJ-duo Grumpy Old Men & Draaivereniging Gramofoon.

Willy Wodka (doorlopend)
Willy Wodka, beeldhouwer en ‘mad scientist’ Richard Trevors, creëert indrukwekkende en theatrale installaties en performances waarmee hij al op Magneetfestival, Mysteryland en Burning Man stond. Voor deze Rocket Cinema Museumnacht editie creëerde hij een wodkabar vol gekkigheid, CO2, stoom, ‘instant cooling’ en theatrale apparaten (waarvan de meesten ook daadwerkelijk werken).

STEVEN SEVERIN: VAMPYR

Rocket Cinema is proud to present a unique screening of Vampyr in the Oude Kerk during MuseumNacht with a new soundtrack by Steven Severin. Acclaimed solo artist and founder member of the legendary Siouxsie And The Banshees, Steven Severin has been involved in the making of soundtracks for films and theatre productions in the last 10 years. Now he's touring with Vampyr (1932), a lesser-known version of the Dracula story by experimental Danish director Carl Dreyer. Vampyr was actually Dreyer's first sound film, though it retains the aesthetic of a silent picture and uses dialogue sparingly. It is the third in Severin's Music For Silents project, following an initial outing that featured Germaine Dulac's 30-minute classic The Seashell And The Clergyman (1928) alongside a selection of contemporary silent shorts, and a tour soundtracking Jean Cocteau's The Blood Of A Poet (1932).

Severin presents a mesmerising score, heightening appreciation of the surreal and enigmatic nature of the original work. Vampyr', Carl Theodor Dreyer's unsettling tale of fear and obsession finds its aural counterpart in Severin's textured score; a synthesised, highly atmospheric soundscape drawing the listener rhythmically into the story. Shot with a silent film aesthetic despite being within the sound era (and a year after Bela Lugosi starred in Hollywood's first Dracula), Vampyr is an alternative take on the cinematic vampire, creating an intense, nightmarish atmosphere that haunts the mind.
