The histories of both crafting and storytelling are as ancient and interlaced as the bond between the words text and textile. During this evening we will be unraveling these ties and exploring the profound role that textiles have played in myths, uncovering themes of agency, resistance, and fate in both the physical and metaphysical realms. Come hear the tales of Arachne, Philomela, and Ariadne, as told by skilled storytellers who will not only bring these myths to life but also weave them together into new interpretations and unique tales that bridge the ancient and the modern.

So are you a mythology enthusiast or a fibre nerd? (Or maybe both!) Then come to Knits and Myths, a special storytelling evening centered around mythology and textile crafts. Feel free to bring your current craft project and immerse yourself in the rhythm of the spoken words as they transport you into a multitude of alternate realms.

“Philomela, a princess of Athens, was separated from her sister Procne after Procne married the king Tereus.
When Tereus assaulted Philomela, he cut out her tongue to silence her and imprisoned her far away.
But Philomela found another language. She wove her story into cloth and secretly sent it to her sister. Procne understood.”

For our first edition of Knits & Myths, we are looking for a personal story (max. 8 minutes) inspired by themes from this myth:

Being silenced
Finding another language when words are impossible
Weaving, handmade piece
Sisterhood, allies, (chosen) family

Maybe there was a moment when speaking was not possible, or not safe.
Maybe you communicated through something else — through making, through gesture, through objects, through absence.
Maybe a knitted piece, carried what you could not say out loud.

Route naar Tolhuistuin

Tolhuistuin (voorheen Paradiso Noord) is gevestigd aan IJpromenade 2 in Amsterdam Noord. Vanaf Amsterdam Centraal kun je met de gratis veerpont naar de overkant, waar je na links af te hebben geslagen, tegen Tolhuistuin aanloopt. Voor clubnachten wordt de ingang aan de achterkant gebruikt (Buiksloterweg 5C), die te bereiken is via het Overhoeksplein.

Bij Tolhuistuin is het mogelijk om vooraf te dineren in het gezellige restaurant in hetzelfde gebouw. Reserveren is aan te raden en kan via deze website.
