Emmanuel Jal & Nyaruach

Emmanuel Jal en Nyaruach zijn twee artiesten met een bijzonder verhaal: deze broer en zus groeiden los van elkaar op in jaren ’80 in Zuid-Soedan, waar sinds de jaren ’50 tot 2005 een hevige burgeroorlog woedde. Emmanuel Jal werd als zevenjarig kind gerekruteerd als kindsoldaat en gescheiden van zijn familie. Ook Emmanuel’s zus, Nyaruach, groeide op zonder familie in een verscheurd land. In 2004 zagen de broer en zus elkaar weer voor het eerst, en in 2005 brachten ze samen het nummer ‘Gua’ (Vertaald: ‘Vrede’) uit, wat een grote hit werd in Kenia. Vorig jaar bracht het duo hun goed ontvangen album ‘NAATH’ uit, waarop opgewekte afrobeat te horen is, gemixt met hiphop en traditionele, Zuid-Sudanese en Keniaanse muziek.

Inmiddels wonen beide artiesten in Canada en is  Emmanuel Jal uitgegroeid tot prijswinnend acteur, muzikant, rapper, TED-spreker en vredesactivist. Zijn leven werd verfilmd in de film ‘War Child’ (2008). De film won diverse belangrijke filmprijzen. Ook Nyaruach is uitgegroeid tot vrouwenrechtenactivist en werkt samen met haar broer aan hun stichting ‘Gua Africa’, waarmee ze strijden tegen armoede en ongelijkheid in hun geboorteland Zuid-Soedan.

Over het album ‘NAATH’:
NAATH  is a vivacious, Afrobeat infused album with Emmanuel and Nyaruach drawing strongly on the unique sounds of their country; interweaving traditional folklore and love songs - alongside infectious dance tunes. NAATH is the ancient word for the land and language surrounding the glorious Kingdom of Kush. Carefully choosing this theme - Jal and Nyaruach's music is often at odds with the image of war and poverty that has blighted South Sudan. Instead, both artists choose to reflect upon the resilience and rich culture of their identity through their vibrant tones and messaging.

As siblings we were forced apart in our childhood through extreme circumstances, so we are excited to be united on this project to bring the sounds of our village to the mainstream."
