Gevelexpositie

Saskia Janssen, de creatieve kracht achter Studio Ski, is een illustrator uit Utrecht die zich laat inspireren door alledaagse thema’s. Deze vertaalt ze op een anekdotische en herkenbare manier in haar werk. Haar schetsboek is een rijke verzameling van tekeningen, variërend van honden en hun baasjes tot mensen in ongemakkelijke houdingen, zelfbedachte pretparken en vrolijke verkleedpartijtjes. De strips die je hier op de gevel ziet, zijn het resultaat van een unieke samenwerking met Elmer, de rapper uit Amsterdam. Samen werkten ze aan visuals voor Elmers album Platland, dat afgelopen oktober werd uitgebracht. Saskia’s werk kreeg eerder al aandacht door haar versie van ‘Crackfriet’, die te zien was tijdens Elmers tour.

This exhibition showcases a collage of photographs from the shoots for our Knits and Tits Year Calendar 2025, a collaboration between Knits and Notes and photographer Em Revill. The calendar celebrates handcrafting as the ultimate expression of love: self-love, as well as the love extended to others; with each stitch representing care, touch, and time. Highlighting knitting and crocheting as historically-undervalued art forms, largely due to their connotations with femininity, this project reclaims these mediums as acts of self-love and tools for empowerment. Featuring twelve women in handmade creations, photographed in each of their personal domestic residences, Knits and Tits serves to challenge assumptions about crafting and allow women to showcase both their art and sexuality on their own terms. The calendar is available at our Knits and Tits event on December 9th at Paradiso and via the Paradiso web shop. Special thanks to Julia Verhoef (@juultekent) for her illustrations and graphic design efforts.

Anouk van Zwietens concept 'Here and There' weerspiegelt de essentie van het schilderproces, waarin een constante beweging plaatsvindt tussen "hier" en "daar" — zowel fysiek als conceptueel. Aan de ene kant trekt elke nieuwe laag in een schilderij Anouk "daar" naartoe — naar een nieuwe dimensie van materiaal, verf en textuur, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd terugkeert naar eerdere lagen om dieper in te gaan op de details en texturen die al bestaan en het beeld opnieuw vorm te geven.Deze voortdurende beweging is niet alleen een beschrijving van "het maakproces", maar dient ook als metafoor voor een dieper, persoonlijk, introspectief proces.

Anouk van Zwieten is geboren in Amsterdam (1991) en woont en werkt in Utrecht.

Reform Stigma streeft ernaar om percepties over Amsterdam-Zuidoost te transformeren door een dynamische, inclusieve en bloeiende gemeenschap te creëren, die bekend staat om zijn unieke cultuur, diverse perspectieven en een sterk gevoel van eenheid. Op dinsdag 5 november presenteren ze de DIP avond ‘More than Unity’ in de Bovenzaal, een avond waar autodidacte creatievelingen een podium krijgen.

Deze gevelexpo toont werk van Lovia Opoku & Jhelsia Panfred, Joey Burnet, Gabriela Akyea en Arnetta Abbigail.

Tijdens haar studie aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) ontwikkelde kunstenaar Melissa Schriek een fascinatie voor de grens tussen waarheid en fictie. Haar achtergrond in onder andere dans inspireert haar om de sculpturale vormen van het vrouwelijk lichaam te verkennen, evenals de dynamiek van vrouwelijke identiteit en zelfexpressie. Ze is voortdurend op zoek naar momenten waarop emoties en boodschappen worden gecommuniceerd door middel van lichaamstaal. Melissa’s unieke perspectief op de wereld daagt kijkers uit om de subjectieve aard van waarneming te bevragen.

Puck Rietveld is a multidisciplinary artist from Schiedam, The Netherlands. Her work interweaves what’s going on inside her mind: emotions, dreams, fears, loves, obsessions, thoughts and fantasies. Together they form a big visual diary of the time that passes and the self discovery that comes along the way, often depicted by central themes such as feminity, sexuality, nature, trauma, sensuality and the occult.

Jesse Averdijk is een kunstenaar uit Zwolle. Hij is net afgestudeerd aan de ArtEZ hogeschool voor de kunsten en werkt nu hard om zijn stempel op de kunstwereld te drukken. Zijn kunst is bedoeld om een gevoel van plezier en ontdekking op te roepen door middel van kleurrijke en vaak belachelijke scènes. Het gebruik van dieren kan worden verklaard door Jesse's intrinsieke neiging om zich niet te schamen, evenals de mogelijkheid van vele verschillende vormen en maten. In plaats van te proberen verschillende maatschappelijke onderwerpen te spiegelen of te bekritiseren, probeert deze kunst de stemming van de kijkers te verbeteren.

Best Copies is a research project that started in 2017, which has evolved into the development of a typeface based on source material from scanned Christchurch Press microfilm. In the creation of Best Copies typeface, scans have been enlarged focusing on each letter of the alphabet. Once enlarged, small variations can be seen across the same letter form. This typeface is intended to have images that connect to, or complement, the type forms and allow the "typesetter' to pick from the different versions of each letter.
Lee Richardson is a graphic designer from Waiōpai Invercargill currently based in Amsterdam. For the Paradiso Facade he worked with master screen printer Matthew Rich, who printed this work in M.A.R.S. Print Studio in Glasgow.

Milan Hulsing is a comic artist and illustrator, born in Amsterdam.

This series of portraits is his tribute to musicians from the Middle East, Egypt, the Maghreb, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Iran, Turkey, India and Pakistan, from a time when funk/jazz/psychedelic music went global. Hulsing is an avid record collector and musical tourist and has done designs for the record labels Habibi Funk, Souma Records and Grey Past Records.

Modern Times, Human Nature is een serie stillevenfoto's gemaakt door de Nederlandse fotograaf Rogier Alleblas. Rogier onderzoekt de relatie tussen mens en natuur, evenals menselijk gedrag, door middel van klassieke fotografische stillevens die doen denken aan 17e-eeuwse schilderijen. Plastic afval, voedselverspilling, vleesconsumptie en meer komen op een verontrustende maar humoristische manier naar voren in de fotografische werken van Rogier Alleblas. 

Dit fotoproject kwam tot stand met steun van Stichting Oog op de Natuur. De stichting ondersteunt fotografen bij het het vertellen van belangrijke verhalen over de natuur en de manier waarop ze de natuur.

Het kleurrijke en excentrieke werk van de Amsterdamse beeldend kunstenaar AiRich valt binnen de stroming 'Afrofuturisme'. Haar portretten benadrukken kracht, genezing en de viering van haar Afrikaanse wortels met invloeden van science fiction, surrealisme, fantasy en psychedelische kunst.

Haar eerste solotentoonstelling is momenteel te zien in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam tot juni 2024.

Cyclists of Amsterdam
Every minute of every day in Amsterdam life whizzes by in a two-wheeled whirl. Where is everyone going? All we see are momentary flashes of people’s urban journeys, speeding to school or work, flying across intersections, pausing at a red light or braving an unexpected downpour. For local artist and illustrator Monique Wijbrands, capturing these micro-moments of her fellow cyclists in transit is a constant source of inspiration. While each scene has a million variations, together they form the collective memory of the city she loves. Her work is a colourful tribute to the streets that make Amsterdam unique: a vibrant tapestry of a city eternally on the move.

Dit jaar bestaat de interdisciplinaire Amsterdamse kunstorganisatie Sonic Acts dertig jaar. Begin februari is de jubileumeditie van de biënnale van start gegaan, waarbij de nadruk ligt op spectaculaire, multisensorische culturele praktijken die reageren op klimaatnood, wereldwijde geopolitiek en het ongrijpbare. Op vrijdag 23 februari 2024 presenteert kunstenaar Tianzhuo Chen tijdens de biënnale TRANCE in Paradiso. Het multidisciplinaire clubspektakel duurt twaalf uur lang en bevindt zich ergens tussen een rockconcert, rave, theaterproductie en buitenaards filmexperiment. “Starting from my own skin and going through different technics, I immersed myself in a long journey in search of my identity as a Palestinian artist who was born and raised in Syria before the war once again forced me to flee on another asylum journey, until I arrived in the Netherlands in 2014. My art is an exploration of the body, war, diaspora, identity, gender and belonging. Through my interdisciplinary art practice, I represent my personal experiences as being stateless for a long time. I do not belong to a specific place and time; for me belonging is a dilemma of our existence, a state of emotional and intellectual flux between our human desires for safety and freedom. This flux formulates our contemporary identity and deeply influences our humane fate.”

Rosa Snijders (1995) is an illustrator from Amsterdam, living in Milan. She works for diverse magazines and newspapers like Het Parool, Trouw, Vrij Nederland and VPRO gids. Her illustrations are often about social issues and people's habits, playing with realism in strong, detailed lines.

Leonie Bos is an Amsterdam based artist, who studied fine arts before starting her career as editorial illustrator. Collaborating with several heavyweight platforms like
The New Yorker and Apple, she is also known for creating covers for Wallpaper* Magazine, Elle Decoration
and the VPRO gids.

Her personal work is about the interaction between shapes and texture. They show highly considered settings in outspoken and striking colours. The subject matter is secondary, mainly providing the framework for her compositions. This selection of sketchbook drawings shows people she spots on the street. If their appearance meets certain criteria, she photographs them in passing. It is about layers of fabric, oversized, flowing, patterned, colorful, that enable her to create drawings that border on abstraction. Although she feels connected to her models while in the proces of drawing, personally they are never the reason for the work. They have become ingredients, carefully put together in an attempt to become a bold
and autonomous artwork.

THEM BUZZED, a project by The Queer Agenda, showcases the portraits of 18 queer women and non-binary individuals, each proudly embracing their buzzcut, an emblem of courage, vulnerability, and empowerment.

Stripped of societal expectations and norms, these individuals shed societal shackles and emerge as strong and authentic beings.

For some, the buzzcut represents a liberation from the burden of conforming to gendered beauty standards. It becomes an opportunity to redefine what it means to be feminine or masculine, embracing a fluidity that transcends traditional boundaries.

For others, it’s just an easy morning hairdo.

Fenna Schilling’s (NL) distinct graphic compositions of objects, nature, and landscapes highlight the beauty of the everyday. Through manually cut and digitally reworked collages, elements are stripped from their original context and function. While new analog and digital hybrid still life’s emerge from her painterly play with perception, scale, shape, texture, and color.

Jim Klok explores the materiality of images and the role they play in our everyday life. His practice revolves around the (re-)creation of imagery through photography, drawing and printing. By compiling these techniques and presenting them alongside each other he strives to process and interpret the images we see around us everyday. In doing so he creates a network of loose associations that allow for one thing to lead to another.

Amsterdam-based collective Experimental Jetset (Marieke Stolk, Erwin Brinkers, Danny van den Dungen) have been involved in the graphic language of Paradiso since 1995. Recently commissioned to come up with a compact graphic system for DIP (Dinsdag in Paradiso), they proposed to simply encapsulate the acronym DIP within the days of the week. Part grid-locked calendar and part concrete poetry, the resulting template can be described as follows: MA, DIP, WO, DO, VR, ZA, ZO.

Displayed on the facade of Paradiso is a small selection of sketches, showing the working process of Experimental Jetset. Through endless repetitions, typographic variations, pop references and poetic interventions, the DIP template seems to be constructed and deconstructed at the same time.

Schilder en striptekenaar Marcel Ozymantra maakte deze tekenfilmserie speciaal voor de gevelexpositie. Vier van zijn personages vechten voor de ultieme prijs: toegang tot poptempel Paradiso. Je ziet Face Horse, Red Gladiator, Bonemachine en Rogue Storm rennen en springen om vooruit te komen, terwijl op de achtergrond het stadslandschap voortdurend verandert van ochtend naar nacht. Dezelfde personages en nog veel meer komen voor in zijn strip Laagland, die dit jaar verschijnt.

Anna June is an illustrator from Leiden. She is obsessed with shrimps, waves and wavy original potato chips. Her illustration work is often about people’s habits, humans versus nature and identity.

“My drawings offer an insight into my head, where everything is allowed to flow, crumble and wobble.”

Jitske’s work is an exploration of colors, patterns, forms, and the world around her, as well as her own interpretation of it. She is drawn to the complexities and nuances of using multiple colors and patterns to create a chaotic aesthetic. Through her pieces, she hopes to offer viewers the possibility of discovering something new each time they engage with her work.

Her drawings are influenced by the fast-paced nature of our modern world, where there is always so much happening at once: social media, hurried people, big cities, radio, trends, TV, and constant social connections. Although she doesn’t directly address this in her work, it is reflected in the chaotic energy and movement of the pieces.

Paul Faassen's work explores the relationship between human and non-human animals. Despite the great similarities, there are still characteristic differences. We know that humans are good at mirroring and projecting in addition to navel-gazing. The hundreds of bird aquarelles that Paul Faassen has made in recent years are about our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others and to think about what is going on within them.

De Illustratie Biënnale nodigde tien illustratoren uit een keuze te maken uit het rijke archief van Paradiso en er een nieuw affiche voor te maken. 

Met werken van Anna Bay, Isa Grutter, Jimena Estíbaliz, Micha Huigen, Amber Hyacinth, Melcher Oosterman, Alejandro Magallanes, Bob Mollema, Floor Smit en Noa Zuidervaart.

De komende editie van de Illustratie Biënnale is op 10 en 11 juni in de Schuur in Haarlem.

The biggest feminist movement of our times has been unfolding in Iran, with people taking to the streets and declaring to the world that there is no freedom until all women are free.

From the start of these protests, schoolgirls have played a pivotal role. Waving their compulsory headscarves in the air, chanting ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ in their classrooms, writing protest slogans in their schools and posting images of their resistance on social media (without giving away their identities,
as this is too dangerous).

These teenage girls have broken down the gigantic wall of fear.

Now, a few months later, the same schoolgirls are being poisoned en masse. As revenge. To silence their voices. To prevent them from going to school. To hold on to power.

These girls ask us to not look away. Not to forget their fight. To stay with them and to amplify their voices. That is what we can do. That is what I can do. 

I look. I zoom in. I listen. I take screenshots. I put them together. I
witness.

Een gevelexpositie ter ere van de mede-oprichter van Paradiso, Willem de Ridder, en het 55-jarig bestaan van Paradiso. De Ridder was kunstenaar, verhalenverteller en radiomaker en zette zich in voor allerlei ontwikkelingen op het gebied van kunst en cultuur. Ook stond hij aan de wieg van meerdere tijdschriften, zoals Hitweek, een jongerentijdschrift, en het seksblad Suck. Dit allemaal is terug te zien in deze gevelexpositie. 

Ook is er een speciale Willem de Ridder krant gedrukt die nog via onze webshop verkrijgbaar is waarin je je nóg meer kan verdiepen in de wereld van Willem de Ridder. 

Kunstenaar Hans De Tweede schrijft in de stad over de actualiteit en zijn omgeving. Hij vindt dat we het ‘paleis’ op de dam weer moeten gebruiken zoals het bedoeld is: als stadhuis.

Voor het vereren van bijzondere mensen hebben we geen paleis nodig, daar hebben we Paradiso voor.

Ingrid Enache is a Romanian visual designer based in the Netherlands, graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2023. Dancing between digital and analog media, she approaches the music industry in a humorous and vibrant way through graphic design and art direction. She likes loud music and even louder colours, and they all come together in her work.

In this facade exhibition Ingrid Enache and printer Zwaan Lenoir created an ode to the emerging acid house rave scene during the 80s and 90s where, out of necessity and creative freedom, every DJ would design, print and distribute their own flyers for their underground parties. One of the posters as seen on the image above was designed on an iMac G3 from 1998 and is now on sale in our Paradiso webshop for €20,- until March 1st.

'Accidental Storylines' is an ongoing project by Dutch Illustrator Joost Stokhof. The series contains more than 300 A4-sized drawings based on memories, thoughts, views, photographs, dreams and everything in between. All drawings are made in one go. No plans upfront, no touch ups afterwards. With no specific way to read these pages it's up to you to decide where the story begins and where it ends.

Larissa Ambachtsheer is a visual artist with a green heart. She is interested in topics related to human behavior, consciousness and sustainability. Her awareness of major changes in the world started as a young WWF ranger. Food plays a big part in her work. “My parents always told me not to play with my food. But what if I do?" This is an important statement for her photographic series 'You Choose, I Seduce'.

Snars is a Moluccan-based artist from Amsterdam. He is an illustrator/graphic designer with a breakdance/hip hop background. His work has to do with street culture. The moves he uses with breakdance are reflected in his work. It's raw with a playful touch. Snars finds the hip-hop mentality to make something out of nothing important. And he is passing on knowledge to the next generation. "Each one teaches one". The tranquillity and colors he uses for his work relate to his Moluccan roots. Moluccan people are island people where time does not or hardly exist. Snars wants to give the viewer of his work the peace that the island residents have in the Moluccas. In this hectic society we could use some rest.

Kaagman started the KoeCrandt in 1977, the first Dutch Punk paper. At this period Kaagman squatted a building in the Sarphatistraat 62. In this building various artists and musicians were settled and everyone with artistical aspirations could find a place to create and show their work. 

People were welcome to write all sorts of anarchistic or political slogans on the wall. Nowadays it is difficult to find this kind of subcultural places, but Punk is back again! Punk is not dead! The corona-crisis, housing crisis, climate and “good civility” is getting Punk back to us. In the ArtKitchen Gallery at the Hemonylaan 6a we will show you Punk of the late seventies/early 80s

and Punk now (like Asociaal Kabaal). In which way are these two periods alike?

On this facade exhibition you see a selection of work from Kaagman from the 70’s/80s.

Tijdens de eerste lockdown in 2020 ontstond Lekkermenselijk. Een Instagram-account waarop Melroy Bisel zijn frustraties, op creatieve manier wilde uiten. Onderwerpen als dierenleed, onrecht, sex en typisch herkenbare situaties vormen de rode draad in de vele illustraties en grapjes.

Sander Ettema is an illustrator based in Drachten, Friesland. His work revolves around a few reoccurring themes such as folklore, games, mortality, fear, efficiency and nostalgia. Every image is made from gut feeling and association, planning is hardly ever part of his process. The illustrations themselves serve as both research and escapism. Through illustrative world building exercises Sander tries to assemble his thoughts and make sense of them.

Old Answers, New Questions
The expressive and lively works in Marlou Fernanda’s debut solo exhibition 'OldAnswers, New Questions' show an artistic transformation, a release. Opening the 12th of May at Hama Gallery, till the 3rd of July 2022. 

Jip van den Toorn (1993) is een illustrator uit Amsterdam. Ze illustreert voor Nederlandse en Belgische kranten en tijdschriften waaronder De VPROgids, Het Parool en De Standaard. Elke zaterdag heeft ze een beeldcolumn in De Volkskrant, waarin ze als geen ander de tijdsgeest weet te vangen en haar blik op de wereld deelt.

Kunstenaar en ontwerper Yuri Veerman stuurde alle gemeenteraadsleden in Amsterdam een email met daarin de vraag: Bestaan slechte mensen? Bijna alle partijen stuurde een antwoord terug.

In de Kente serie wordt het Ghanese textiel dat over de schouder van het onderwerp is gedrapeerd, door Kenneth Aidoo geweven in acrylverf op papier. Geen enkel palet of motief verschijnt twee keer, elke unieke Kente representeert het visuele verhaal van deze
schilderijen. Het prestige van het textiel en degenen die het dragen wordt benadrukt door het koninklijke thema van de titels van de serie: van It is always a good day to be king (2021) tot Heavy is the head that bears the crown (2021). De Kente serie bevat bovendien verwijzingen naar hedendaagse zwarte popcultuur, waaronder een hommage aan T’Challa, zowel als Black is King uit 2020. Deze serie benadrukt, zeker als collectief bekeken, een overvloed aan verhalen waaruit de kunstenaar zijn inspiratie haalt.

Olf de Bruin is an Amsterdam based illustrator. Inspired by Paradiso's arches, he designed a set of 2 posters which can be repeated until infinity creating a 'polonaise' of people keeping each other's ears closed. For purchasing the set please contact the artist via [email protected].

Dewy Elsinga, also known under the name Butterfingaz, is an Amsterdam born and raised visual artist. During art school Elsinga developed a big interest the painting process, in which she mainly experimented with selfmade brushes and tools. Colorwise inspired by OP art and 70s funk culture, her current work covers paintings and murals in which she aims to play between abstract and figurative images.

Daniela Schwabe (1984) is a painter based between Amsterdam and Berlin. In her work, she deals with history and remembrance on an individual level.

SAD SONGS (2018) is a series of 10 x 10 cm panels in black and white oil paint, based on iconic images mostly found online.

SAD SONGS were originally made for the album cover of the band ‘SAD SONGS FOR HAPPY PEOPLE’ and are evolving ever since.

Robin Alysha Clemens is an Amsterdam based photographer whose work revolves around (sub)cultures and music. With this year's Amsterdam Dance Event taking place during the daytime, this exhibition summons the night, celebrating all the artists and DJs playing in the dark.

Victor Brangolo is a French graphic designer living in Amsterdam. Aside from his job as art director for Oedipus Brewing, he continues drawing. His drawings reinterpret the various archetypal representations of sexes, genitals, and genders. We are used to the symbols of Mars and Venus, but they express a strict vision of each gender, leaving aside other interpretations. His intention is to question rigid representations, scientific dichotomy, and cultural preconceptions that veil everyone's own affects. Are those symbols about reproduction or pleasure? Why is it easier to draw a penis instead of a vulva? Is it about concepts or emotions? 

In preparation for this exhibition, Victor had a discussion with two people about these topics, which resulted in two drawings.

Urban Erosion 

Planners, urban designers, architects. They plan a residential area, develop a city square or design a landmark building. They create a seemingly ideal world. Which only comes alive when people start to work, live and recreate in the created urban environment. When blades of grass peek through the pavement or scrubs start to overgrow complete sections of walls. When sun, rain and wind leave their mark on neighborhoods, squares and buildings. Over time our urban environment evolves. And gains in beauty, far beyond the imagination of architects, urban designers and planners. 

From 2014 to 2020, Dutch photographer Maarten Vromans (1975) explored the impact that people, nature and weather have on urban development. For his ongoing ‘Urban Erosion’ project, Vromans frequently worked in Dutch cities such as Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Delft. And from time to time, he also took photographs in other European cities. 

What happens to musicians when all the gigs stop? And what does it mean to photograph musicians off stage, when they’re not performing? 

These two interlinked questions, the former practical and born of a mundane curiosity, the latter more philosophical and perhaps unanswerable, prompted Amsterdam-based photographer Bibian Bingen to undertake the experiment-turned-exposition you’re now looking at. 

Amid wider devastation, the COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the musical world. Though not quite in the same way or to the same extent, Bibian’s work was also affected by this global crisis. Turning a challenge into an opportunity, Bibian started a project that would allow her to satisfy her curiosity, on the one hand, and offer a stage, albeit a slightly different one, to showcase musicians’ work, on the other.

Bibian contacted ten artists and asked them to let her into their lives, inviting them to come onto the project as collaborators instead of mere subjects. Together, they curated and produced unique photoshoots and corresponding images that mirror and/or complement the artists’ contemporary state of mind. 

What started out as a rhetorical question Bibian asked herself on a blue Monday has turned into a zestful project that conveys a different side of musicians as they take up new hobbies, try new things and recalibrate. But it also brings to the surface some of the features that they share: resilience in the face of adversity, the ability (and many attempts!) to make sense out of misery, and the undeniable, poignant desire to resume work. 

Taken together, this exposition invites viewers to consider the tension between the good that can come from trying circumstances, and all that is, nevertheless, lost in the process. The work is at once a (small) crown piece on Bibian’s career as Paradiso’s in-house photographer and the semi-official (or: at least public) start of a new, larger project that strives to push the envelope of documentary photography. 

The captions that accompany the pictures (and this project description) were written by Esther Baar. They are an amalgam of semi-literal descriptions of the various activities that were undertaken during the ten shoots, Bibian’s impression of her subjects, and Esther’s impression of Bibian’s experiences. 

The design and fonts that wrap around the pictures were created by Sander Puhl. Each of them hand-drawn, the ten unique fonts highlight the musicians’ pluriform identities and lend the project an editorial feel that celebrates their perseverance and gusto. 

Bob Mollema, Bennekom 1990, works as an illustrator, artist and musician. He mainly works on large projects where humanity, absurdity, desire and dishonesty are central. These elements form a cocktail that results in critical, sometimes humorous, illustrations that make people think. He mainly works with graphite and eraser because his signature matches his themes with this material. Sometimes he colours the whole digitally and then screen print it again. This process fits his work because humanity is sometimes given away to the computer. In addition to independent projects, he works for various clients ranging from newspapers to music halls.

Dutch-Croatian artist based in Amsterdam. Her practice emanates from photography and diverts to painting and collage techniques, resulting in mixed media art. Through photography she captures miniature performances in which a human figure (usually Marušić herself), sometimes accompanied by another, uncannily moves through a surreal landscape. The stories she creates often find their genesis in her personal life. Her latest works explore the powerful and transformative experience of motherhood, initiated by the first physical signs of her pregnancy early 2020 and followed by the birth of son Sasha on June 18th of the same year.

Rob Renoult heeft een selectie gemaakt van de tekeningen en schilderijen die hij de afgelopen jaren heeft gemaakt. Het thema van zijn werk is al meer dan veertig jaar gerelateerd aan zijn afkomst en persoonlijke geschiedenis. 

De Amsterdamse kunstenaar exposeert regelmatig en dit jaar zal zijn werk te zien zijn op de Kunstbeurs in de RAI bij galerie Serieuze Zaken van Rob Malasch en op de tekeningenbeurs Art on Paper bij galerie Fred Wagemans op het Westergasfabriekterrein. 

Joost Termeer is a photographer who’s focussed on ob- jects, sets and still lifes. His work is playful, colourful and partially absurd. It does not provide tools, more so it plays into the imagination. He sees my images as signs that reference a recognisability but all together form a new world. By taking elements out of context something new is emerging. In that moment the viewer is confronted with their own interpretations of the world.

Bypassers, acquaintances and friends were starting points for the paintings on display. By apporpriating details of their appearance, Zamblé shapes new and bold figures. The self-assured figures serve as the standard rather than an exception. 

De Rotterdamse Xaviera Altena maakt kleurrijke illustraties over sociale issues, voor onder meer opdrachtgevers als de VPRO, de Correspondent, The Guardian en The New Yorker. Naast haar illustratiewerk cureert en beheert ze Brainstorm Radio. 

Over het werk wat aan de gevel hangt zei ze:

"Ik ben uitgegaan van mijn eigen herinneringen aan Paradiso, en dat zijn - onder andere - de klassieke rijen die de hoek omgaan voorafgaand aan een groot optreden, iets wat we al maanden niet meer zien voor Paradiso :("

De Utrechtse illustrator Bobbi Oskam (1990) maakte al het werk voor deze gevelexpositie tijdens in dit coronajaar. Daarnaast maakt Bobbi werk voor onder andere De Volkskrant, Le Guess Who? en Kapitaal Utrecht.

Artist and musician Jordie rovers works and lives in Eindhoven. His interest in archeology led to a working method in which heʼs using the imperfection and uncontrolled changes of traces left by humanity.

For the Paradiso façade exhibition he repeated a damaged empty seat 36 times to represent the crowd in the cultural scene during COVID-19 times.

Op 2 november zouden De Kiesmannen optreden in Paradiso met hun Verkiezingsshow: ‘This is America.’ Als aankondiging voor dit programma maakte Paradiso-vormgever Sander Puhl deze collage: een terugblik op vier jaar Trump. De Verkiezingsshow moest wegens de coronamaatregelen worden afgelast, maar deze aankondiging is coronaproof te bekijken.

Sara Punt’s photography is an ongoing exploration of the human form. With a background in dancing, she strongly believes that when you explore your human form as a work of art, your idea of that form will change together with your perspective. 

From a young age, society teaches us to sexualize and judge the naked body. But we don’t learn to explore and create with the bodies we’ve been given. As we grow up, certain body parts can start to carry a lot of weight as well. Think of: bullying, sexual abuse, trauma, injuries and beauty standards. It influences how we think, feel, and experience our human form on a daily basis. During Sara’s photoshoots, the goal is to let go of all of these opinions, perceptions and ideas that we have of the body, and to only focus on what’s actually there: a form wrapped in skin that can move and transform. And then, from that state of mind: creating images, like forming sculptures, with the purpose to change the way we experience our bodies.

"Tijdens de lockdown was videobellen de enige manier om iedereen te blijven zien, omdat ik superawkward ben met videobellen begon ik dit project om het voor mezelf leuker te maken. Ik nam stiekem screenshots zodat ik het daarna kon tekenen. Zo keek ik ineens uit naar videobellen." Dat is toelichting van Hedy Tjin op haar gevelexpositie, welke je online kunt bekijken via de Paradiso Instagram.

M9U (Misha Gurovich) is een kunstenaar/ontwerper wonend en werkend in Amsterdam. Hij werkt vooral met nieuwe media, waarmee hij karakters en hun werelden creeërt. Deze kunnen tot uiting komen in sculpturen, games, muziekvideos, afbeeldingen en films. De reeks beelden die hij heeft geselecteerd voor de gevel van Paradiso presenteert hij onder de titel 'Summer is Over'.

Lana Prins onderzoekt, bevraagt en visualiseert levensonderwerpen zoals de liefde, lust, het vrouwelijk lichaam en de dood door middel van haar fotografie. Vrijwel altijd onderzoekt Prins haar onderwerpen vanuit de invalshoek van de positie van de vrouw in de hedendaagse westerse maatschappij. Ze gebruikt haar camera om dichter bij anderen te komen — zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk. Haar camera is niet enkel een vorm van documentatie, maar tevens een middel om de meest intieme uitingen van menselijke emoties te ervaren - of het nu gaat om liefde, sex of de dood. In deze gevelexpositie heeft Prins in losse beelden een visuele tijdlijn neergezet waarin persoonlijke levensonderwerpen voorbijkomen. De tijdlijn loopt niet geheel chronologisch, maar voelt aan als losse flarden van herinneringen. 

De Frans-Thaise fotografe Nolwenn Le Flanchec creëerde de serie ‘Inside and outside collide here’. Een serie die de complexiteit van de vrouwelijke identiteit binnen de Thaise samenleving belicht en viert. De ambivalente relatie van Thailand met het westen en de neiging om zichzelf te oriëntaliseren, heeft geresulteerd in de verspreiding van hybride culturen. In een land dat overdag als traditioneel wordt gezien en 's nachts als frivool, leven Thaise vrouwen hierdoor in een polariteitsparadox. Een waar ze in één keer als alles en niets worden beschouwd. Aan de hand van thema's als herinnering en ontheemding, wordt Nolwenn's reflectieve fotografische reis over de identiteit van Thaise vrouwen ondernomen met een subtiele meditatie over de natuur en haar transformaties, waarbij een portret van de Thaise vrouw van vandaag wordt opgesteld.

Brian Elstak is beeldend kunstenaar, illustrator, schilder, kinderboekenschrijver en verbinder tussen verschillende creatieven en verhalenvertellers (onder andere met zijn podcast OWRU). Hij is onderdeel van kunstcollectief LFMC (Lowrey Foley McClane) en maakt zich al jaren sterk voor de zwarte/hiphop cultuur. Het werk van Brian Elstak was onder meer te zien in het Stedelijk Museum, het Van Gogh Museum, Museum Het Rembrandthuis en The Black Archives. Zijn beeldende stijl varieert van tekeningen in zwartgrijze tinten en kleurrijke korte animaties tot grote muurschilderingen en installaties. Zijn stijl is gevormd door ”comics, cartoons en Hip Hop cultuur.” “Dit is de beeldtaal die jonge mensen begrijpen en herkennen uit muziek, film, memes en populaire cultuur.”

Jip Piet is beeldend kunstenaar, performance artist en oprichter van het kunstenaarsinitiatief 'Raam Maar': een experimentele ruimte voor tekenkunst.

Deze serie portretten genaamd “Vieze Vuile Gluiperds” is ontstaan in de begindagen van de corona lockdown. Net zoals vele collega artiesten vielen voor Jip Piet opdrachten en optredens uit. De frustratie over de pandemie resulteerde in de portretten serie "Vieze Vuile Gluiperds". Als kunstenaar en performer vindt Jip Piet interactie met publiek van essentieel belang. De interactie helpt hem vorm te geven aan zijn werk en geeft hem bijna altijd nieuwe inzichten voor toekomstige projecten. Via zijn Instagram account stelde hij de vraag: “Welke lelijke gluiperd moet ik natekenen?”, waarop hij veel reacties kreeg. Inmiddels staat de teller op 89 portretten en dat loopt nog steeds door.

Fotograaf Lonneke van der Palen en curator Jules van den Langenberg delen beelden en woorden uit hun persoonlijke archieven verzameld tijdens de lock-down. Welk gedrag en taal zal de nieuwe realiteit worden na Covid-19?

Leeza Pritychenko is een Russische mediakunstenaar en freelance grafisch ontwerper uit Moskou, die is gevestigd in Amsterdam. Haar werk bestaat uit VJ-ing, videokunst, interactieve installaties en AV-samenwerkingen met muzikanten. Haar werk focust zich op de zoektocht naar het "menszijn", door de lens van digitale media en technologie. Door donkere existentialistische en griezelige, surrealistische visualisaties te combineren met online onzin trekt ze onze realiteit in twijfel. Haar werk is te zien geweest in heel Europa, de VS en China; en ze heeft opgetreden op verschillende muziek- en digitale cultuurfestivals.

Lou Buche is een Franse grafisch kunstenaar gevestigd in Amsterdam. Hij studeerde twee jaar geleden af aan de Rietveld Academie. Zijn praktijk focust zich vooral op hoe performances kunnen bijdragen aan de vormgeving en boodschap van zijn ontwerpen. Daarbij onderzoekt hij wat de rol van stilstaande beelden betekenen in onze tijd. Zijn werk combineert digitale en analoge materialen die hij altijd op een nieuwe manier probeert te combineren. Hij exposeerde op verschillende plekken in Nederland, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Tsjechië.
