What was the point in your life that made you decide to pursue a career in music?
I think I’ve always known I’d have some sort of career in music. I actually never considered being an artist though. I thought I’d be a music supervisor or a lyricist, cause I just never thought I had much of an interesting voice / it was strong enough or that I’d be able to perform in front of people!! So I kind of beautifully fell into writing in sessions with lovely producers that helped me find my sound and it’s really been everyone who’s listened to my music and supported me that’s kept me releasing. I love every aspect of music and I honestly have so many pinch me moments cause I can’t believe I get to call this my job.
Can you tell us about the most challenging period in your career and how you overcame it?
Probably performing ahah. I’m in no way a natural performer. For so many years when I started doing gigs, I was so nervous I had to sit on a chair to play songs. And then for many gigs after, I had to wear super baggy jeans, cause I was just so so shaky and nervous. I also get such imposter syndrome when I do headline gigs. I absolutely love being able to meet everyone but I genuinely can’t get my head around the idea they want to come watch me play live.
I think I’m getting better the more I do it. It really is a fake it till you make it job. Watching other artists perform also helps so much. It makes me realise what I like to see as an Audience member. And breathing!! Taking biggg deep breaths helps so much.
Which artists have influenced you the most in your creative process?
So so many. I love Paolo Nutini’s first few albums and how different each song feels, while still sounding very much like him. I love Faye Webster and Clairo’s approach to music and how authentic their music and content they put out is. I love Beabadoobees music videos and how much creativity is put into each one. And I love Adrian Lenkers songwriting. It’s a different level of beautiful and a way of seeing the world
How do you deal with creative blocks or moments of doubt in your work?
Sometimes when I don’t know how on earth to be an artist or what that’s meant to look like, I go watch loads of live gigs. I think just surrounding yourself in what you do and see how it affects people is such an uplifting and inspiring moment.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
"Being angry is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die”. Sometimes it’s best to just let things go and move on. Choosing the see the bright side in life is probably the reason I’m usually always quite happy ahah.
What are two things still on your bucket list?
My biggest dream is to go to Japan! I’ve never been anywhere in Asia before and I think I’ll probably never want to leave
I’d love to record a whole album live for a project one day. I know it would be tedious but I think that’s the music I’m most proud of and feels the most like me
