De tienkoppige Braziliaanse afrobeat band Bixiga 70 staat op vrijdag 5 februari tijdens een editie van Dansé Dansé in Amsterdam. Hun nieuwe album III werd lovend ontvangen en is nu te beluisteren op de 3voor12 luisterpaal.
Bixiga 70 - Ventania
Bixiga 70 is vernoemd naar een wijk in São Paulo, een ware culturele ‘melting pot’ in één van de grootste steden van Brazilie. De tienkoppige band mixt cumbia, Guinese malinké, Braziliaanse candomblé en samba met afrobeat en seventies grooves. Ze speelden al samen met Tony Allen, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 en Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra.
Hun recent verschenen album ‘III’ werd lovend ontvangen: “dozens of bands are exploring Afrobeat’s jittery rhythms and martial horns. Sao Paulo’s Bixiga 70 are more imaginative than most, using Afrobeat as the stock in a stew that’s spiked with ingredients from Brazil, the Caribbean and other parts of Africa. […] The USP is the horn section: instead of the rudimentary fanfares of many Afrobeat bands (Fela’s Afrika 70 included), this lot have some serious chops – and a baritone sax player who can raise goosebumps.” (The Guardian****)
