Xillan

XILLAN (Xillan Macrooy) is a Surinamese-Dutch storyteller working in music, literature and theatre. In his work, he explores identity, transformation and the power of resistance, bringing together personal and cultural narratives in a distinctive artistic language. In 2025 and 2026, as a creator, he will explore new ways to celebrate his multiplicity, with the aim of building new artistic worlds that offer space for both (Surinamese queer) legacy and innovation.

His trilogy ‘COMING OF (R)AGE’ comprises his debut novel, first theatre production and debut album ‘SON’, in which he shares his personal and cultural stories. On ‘SON’, XILLAN turns his gaze towards a changing world and his role within it. Resistance runs like a common thread through the album and is an ode to everyone who, despite the dark clouds hanging over our heads, seeks out the light. Musically, ‘SON’ can be described as avant-garde pop: confrontational, authentic and poetic.
