Het concept van het achtkoppige The Colorist Orchestra uit België is simpel: het collectief rondom bandleiders Aarich Jespers en Kobe Proesmans nodigt een gastmuzikant uit om vervolgens samen het repertoire van deze muzikant te re-arrangeren, herwerken of gewoonweg te verfraaien met hun bijzondere, experimentele instrumentatie. The Colorist Orchestra deed dit bijvoorbeeld al eerder met Gabriel Rios, Lisa Hannigan en Sumie Nagano. Tijdens het concert in Paradiso in 2021 werkt de band samen met de iconische Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Howe Gelb.

De 64-jarige alt.country Americana pionier Howe Gelb heeft een indrukwekkende discografie: hij bracht tot nu toe 60 albums uit, waarvan 24 soloalbums en 36 als bandlid van Giant Sand, The Band of Blacky Ranchette, OP8 en Arizona Amp and Alternator. Ook schreef hij een rockopera: Tucson. The Colorist Orchestra en Howe Gelb hebben elkaar ontmoet in 2017 tijdens een jazzfestival in Luik. De zin naar avontuur, aangemoedigd door wederzijdse muzikale vrienden, stuwde de behoefte om samen muziek te maken. De continue veranderende onorthodoxe klankwereld van The Colorist Orchestra past perfect bij Howe Gelb. Zijn muziek wordt vaak Americana genoemd, maar is moeilijk onder één noemer vast te leggen. Je ziet ze samen in Paradiso op 9 november 2021.

Deze keer wordt extra bijzonder; Howe brengt zijn dochter, Talula, mee om de partijen van Pieta Brown over te nemen. Het is de eerste keer dat de vader en dochter samen op het podium staan in Europa.

Het gezelschap brengt dit najaar ook een gezamenlijk album uit: 'Not On The Map', waarop voor het eerst geen herwerkte maar gloednieuwe songs te horen gaan zijn. Het eerste nummer genaamd 'More Exes' is inmiddels al te beluisteren via Spotify.

How to get to Tolhuistuin

Tolhuistuin (formerly Paradiso Noord) is located at IJpromenade 2 in Amsterdam North. A free ferry runs from Amsterdam Central Station to Buiksloterweg. From there, turn left and you’ll walk straight into Tolhuistuin. For club nights, the rear entrance (Buiksloterweg 5C) is used. This entrance can be reached via Overhoeksplein

Restaurant
