Talk: Mulatu Astatke · Africadelic Festival 2022

Mulatu Astatke staat bekend als de vader van de Ethiopische jazzmuziek, en dat is niet voor niets. Op alle belangrijke instrumentale albums uit de hoogtijdagen van de Ethiopische jazz in de jaren '70 speelt hij mee. De inmiddels 78-jarige muzikant kreeg zijn muzikale vorming in Londen en New York, en in Boston was Astatke de eerste Afrikaanse student aan het gerenommeerde Berklee College of Music. Daar combineerde hij jazz, latin en traditionele Ethiopische muziek. Terug in zijn thuisland introduceerde hij instrumenten als de vibrafoon, keyboard, conga's en de bongo in de muziek. Maar het zijn vooral de groovende, Ethiopische melodielijnen die Astatke in de Amerikaanse jazz bracht waar hij om geroemd wordt. Hij stond met grootheden als Duke Ellington op het podium. Nog altijd inspireert zijn muziek menig muzikant en zijn liedjes worden dan ook veelvuldig als samples gebruikt door artiesten als Nas, Damian Marley en Kanye West. Bij het grote internationale publiek brak Astatke (opnieuw) door, toen vanaf eind jaren '90 de Ethio-jazz heruitgaven van de compilatieserie 'Éthiopiques' verschenen en zijn muziek in 2005 werd gebruikt voor de soundtrack van Jim Jarmusch' film 'Broken Flowers'. De afgelopen jaren volgende nieuwe albums en tours, samen met onder meer The Heliocentrics, Black Jesus Experience en Either/Orchestra.

About Lewis R. Gordon

Lewis R. Gordon is a public intellectual, academic, and musician. who works in the areas of Africana philosophy, existentialism, phenomenology, social and political theory, postcolonial thought, theories of race and racism, philosophies of liberation, aesthetics, philosophy of education, and philosophy of religion. He has written particularly extensively on Africana and black existentialism, postcolonial phenomenology, race and racism, and on the works and thought of W. E. B. Du Bois and Frantz Fanon.
 
He teaches at UCONN, where he is Professor and Head of the Philosophy Department, with affiliations in many academic units. He is the author of many books for which he has received accolades, which include the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award for Outstanding Work on Human Rights in North America. His most recent books are Freedom, Justice, and Decolonization (Routledge, 2021) and Fear of Black Consciousness (New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2022; London: Penguin Books, 2022), which is listed on Literary Hub’s Most Anticipated Books of 2022. He is this year’s recipient of the Eminent Scholar Award from the Global Development Studies division of the International Studies Association and is Distinguished Scholar at The Most Honourable PJ Patterson Centre for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy at The University of the West Indies, Mona.

GRÂCE NDJAKO 

Grâce Ndjako studeerde Filosofie en Politicologie in Amsterdam en Parijs. Ze werkt momenteel aan haar PhD aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en werkt er ook als onderwijsassistent niet-Westerse filosofie. Ze schrijft onder andere voor Dipsaus Exclusives, de Nederlandse Boekengids en Hard//hoofd. In 2020 verscheen haar bijdrage in AfroLit: Moderne literatuur uit de Afrikaanse Diaspora bij uitgeverij Pluim. Onlangs is haar vertaling van Aimé Césaire’s Discours sur le colonialisme is gepubliceerd bij Uitgeverij de Geus.

MATHYS RENNELA

Dr. Mathys Rennela is a Paris-based computer scientist, who moonlights as a dance music writer and club culture critic, most recently as part of the Black collective Technomaterialism. He has a keen interest in the study of Afro diasporic influences in electronic dance music. He is currently analysing the socio-economic conditions of the production of electronic dance music, and studies DJing as a performing art. His goal is to promote alternative economic models for dance music communities, and to contribute to dismantling neo-colonial and capitalistic dynamics in the club industry.
