In 2012 besloot Sturgill Simpson om al zijn bezittingen te verkopen en naar Nashville te vertrekken, om daar een echte, ouderwetse countryplaat te maken. Op zijn solodebuut ‘High Top Mountain’ (2013) wordt de voormalig frontman van Sunday Valley bijgestaan door veteranen als Hargus “Pig” Robbins en Robby Turner, en is Simpson’s eerbied voor voorbeelden als Waylon Jennings duidelijk te horen. Opvolger ‘Metamodern Sounds in Country Music’ (2014) wordt alom geprezen door de manier waarop Simpson de authentieke Nashville-sound nieuw leven inblaast.
