In Paradiso - Upstairs Room
Doors: 21:30, Main programme: 22:00
small museum invites you to an immersive and interactive talk in which we dive into the work I Dance Alone by artist, researcher and curator Bogomir Doringer and analyse the body as an archive of movement. Guided by the soundscapes of Helena Castro (aka Nèna) we will explore our movements together on the dance floor in Paradiso. Entry is free, but we kindly ask you to sign up via our registration form.
I Dance Alone is a captivating visual study which delves into the heart of nightclub culture, where Doringer, from a bird's eye perspective, skilfully documents flows of energetic dance floors worldwide. From October 13th till January 15th, the work is presented in the small museum, housed in a little cabinet on the façade of Paradiso. To conclude this exhibition, the small museum is hosting this immersive and interactive talk together with Doringer.
The work in the small museum shows a zoomed-in perspective of different individual bodies on the dance floor. On Saturday night January 6th, Doringer and small museum curator Rosa Cherim will explore these different bodies as an archive of movement within nightclub culture. As shown in the small museum, the evening starts from a zoomed-in perspective on individual bodies, analysing its movements and gestures. As the evening progresses, so will our perspective as we move towards a broader view: the body in relation to its environment. During this interactive talk, Doringer shows us how our movements relate not only to ourselves, each other and our environment, but also its relation to socio-political structures on which Doringer believes dance floors and nightclub culture is built.
During the evening the audience will be asked to join this exploration as we will question our own movements and gestures in relation to ourselves, each other, the dance floor, the space, Paradiso, the city, and perhaps even in a broader sense: the world. Join us on this explorative dance floor as we question how we move within these socio-political structures: What moves you?

Bogomir Doringer
Bogomir Doringer (Serbia, 1983) studied visual arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He continued his studies at the Dutch Film Academy where he completed his master's in film. Currently he works as an artistic research Ph.D'er at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna in which he continues his research in club and dance culture.
I Dance AloneÂ
In 2015, Doringer started to train his lens and observe the vibrant dance floor of Paradiso during the Amsterdam Dance Event. After the pandemic, Doringer was invited by the small museum to return to Paradiso to re-document the nightclub's diverse nightlife. The socio-political changes that have developed over the past eight years, raised new thought-provoking questions for the artist: How has club culture evolved in the last eight years? What influence do socio-political changes have on the rhythms, rituals, and dance gestures witnessed on these dance floors? How do these socio-political shifts find expression and interpretation through dance? To Doringer, these dancing crowds are like clouds announcing shifts in weather conditions: "There is something truly enchanting and magical about witnessing individuals move freely within a space."
The work in the small museum was made possible by Mondriaanfonds, AFK, Stadsarchief Amsterdam en Paradiso.

small museum
The small museum is a tiny museum, visible only at night, housed in one of the announcement cabinets on the facade of Paradiso. Almost invisible to the public eye, amidst the busy daily life of Amsterdam and commuters racing by on the Weteringschans, the small museum sits and waits quietly for the sun to set. After sundown, city life changes gears, and Amsterdam’s vibrant nightlife comes to life. This is when the museum shines its light.
Open only from dusk till dawn, the small museum zooms in on smaller, less prominent topics and asks us to slow down in our busy, sometimes hectic lives.

How to get to Paradiso
Paradiso is on the Weteringschans 6-8 in Amsterdam. That is very close to Leidseplein. From every part of the city there are trams heading towards Leidseplein. From there on out you can walk to Paradiso. Free and secured underground bike parking is available on the opposite side of Paradiso. Travelling by car is difficult, since there are only a few busy parking lots nearby.Â
