Paradiso and cult cinema LAB111 present the Rocket Cinema Halloween special ‘Frankenstein’:  the classic film from 1931 with a new soundtrack performed live by DJ Luxxx, screened in a  historical laboratory. In this former anatomic pathology laboratory bodies were dissected for medical science around the same time that the film was premiered in cinemas around the world.

Before the film, Dan Hassler-Forest (Mediastudies, University of Utrecht) will give a lecture about the origins of science fiction and why the 200-year-old book by Mary Shelley is still relevant.

Frankenstein (1931, 90 min) vs DJ Luxxx
Mad scientist Victor Frankenstein brings to life a ‘monster’ made out of stolen body parts. An iconic role for actor Boris Karloff and his rise to fame. The film was an inspiration for many other works, including Blade Runner, Real Humans and Westworld. But more importantly, it determined the image of Frankenstein which became part of mass culture and has become synonym to playing god.

The Amsterdam based DJ, VJ and visual artist DJ Luxxx has made a new soundtrack to match the film which she will perform live.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
The film is based on the successful theatre play, but both deviate quite a bit from the original book. The gothic novel ‘Frankenstein’ came out in 1818 and is considered as the first science fiction work ever made. It was written by the then 19-year-old Mary Shelley, daughter of a prominent feminist and mistress to the married poet Percy Shelley. For some, the book can be read as a complaint against slavery or a critique on gender relations. Even though the book is 200 years old, it is as relevant as ever.  Because in a world more and more permeated by technology, the question ‘what makes us human?’ seems to be more current than ever. The novel (and the film) also question who will be seen as a fully-fledged human and who will not be. A question just as relevant for the immigration debate, Black Lives matter and the #MeToo-movement as it is for the public debate about mechanization, artificial intelligence and robotization.

Dan Hassler-Forest works as a teacher and researcher on Mediastudies at the University of Utrecht. In his research, he focusses on the relationship between popular media, politics and ideology and on shifts within the digital media landscape. He wrote ‘Capitalist Superheroes’ (2012) and ‘Science Fiction, Fantasy and Politics’ (2016). Dan regularly gives lectures for College Club and the University of the Netherlands.

The Paradiso project Rocket Cinema has presented cult film with new soundtracks since 1997. DJs and musicians are challenged to compose a new soundtrack to match a classic film and to perform it live at a special location.

Paradiso en cult cinema LAB111 presenteren de Rocket Cinema Halloween special 'Frankenstein'. In het lab waar vroeger menselijke lichamen ontleed werden voor de medische wetenschap vertonen we de filmklassieker 'Frankenstein' uit 1931, met een nieuwe live uitgevoerde soundtrack van dj Luxxx.

Voorafgaand aan de film is er een lezing van Dan Hassler-Forest (Mediastudies, Universiteit Utrecht) over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van science fiction en waarom het 200-jaar oude boek waar de film op gebaseerd is nog steeds relevant is.

In 'Frankenstein' wekt mad scientist Victor Frankenstein een uit geroofde lichaamsdelen samengesteld 'monster' tot leven, de iconische rol waarmee Boris Karloff beroemd werd. De film vormde niet alleen de inspiratie voor vele andere werken, waaronder Blade Runner, Real Humans en Westworld, het bepaalde ook het beeld dat tot onze massacultuur is gaan behoren en dat synoniem werd met het 'voor-god-spelen' door de mens.

De Amsterdamse dj, vj en visuele kunstenaar dj Luxxx maakte een nieuwe, live uitgevoerde soundtrack bij de film.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
De film is gebaseerd op de succesvolle toneelbewerking die destijds volle zalen trok, maar beiden wijken nogal af van het boek dat de inspiratie vormde. De gothic novel 'Frankenstein' verscheen in 1818 en wordt gezien als het eerste science fiction werk ooit. De schrijfster was de 19-jarige Mary Shelley, dochter van een van de eerste feministes van Engeland en maîtresse van de getrouwde dichter Percy Shelley. Door sommigen wordt het boek gezien als een aanklacht tegen slavernij of een kritiek op man-vrouw verhoudingen. Hoewel de roman 200 jaar oud is, is het verhaal nog steeds relevant. Want in een wereld waarin de techniek voortraast, blijkt de vraag ‘wat maakt ons menselijk?’ actueler dan ooit. Bovendien stelt de roman (en de film) ook de vraag wie als volwaardig mens wordt aangezien en wie niet; een vraag die net zo relevant is voor het immigratiedebat, Black Lives matter en de #MeToo-beweging als voor discussies over mechanisatie, artificial intelligence en robotisering.

Dan Hassler-Forest werkt als docent en onderzoeker Mediastudies aan de Universiteit Utrecht. In zijn onderzoek focust hij op de relatie tussen populaire media, politiek en ideologie en op verschuivingen in het digitale medialandschap. Hij schreef onder meer 'Capitalist Superheroes' (2012) en 'Science Fiction, Fantasy and Politics' (2016). Dan geeft regelmatig lezingen, onder meer voor College Club en de Universiteit van Nederland.

Rocket Cinema
Al sinds 1997 presenteert Rocket Cinema, een project van Paradiso, cult films met een nieuwe soundtrack. Dj's en muzikanten worden uitgedaagd om een nieuwe soundtrack te schrijven voor een filmklassieker en deze live op te voeren op een bijzondere locatie.
