Op 11 januari geeft het piepjonge Amerikaanse viral hyperpopduo glaive and ericdoa een concert in Bitterzoet in Amsterdam. Onlangs bracht het duo hun gezamenlijke EP 'then i'll be happy' uit.

glaive is een zestienjarige artiest die pas onlangs aan het begin van de coronacrisis begon met muziek maken. Binnen een maand kwam zijn eerste nummer online en bouwde hij razendsnel een fanbase op. Aan het einde van 2020 bracht hij succesvolle debuut EP 'cypress grove' uit; The FADER benoemde zijn single 'astrid' zelfs tot een van de beste nummers van 2020. In augustus bracht hij opvolger 'all dogs go to heaven' uit, die wederom werd geprezen door onder andere The New Yorker en Rolling Stone.

ericdoa
ericdoa begon met het maken van muziek op veertienjarige leeftijd, geïnspireerd door artiesten als Rick James, Earth Wind & Fire en Teena Marie. Ook hij zette zijn eerste nummers op Soundcloud en bracht in 2020 zijn debuut album 'Public Target' uit. Na een paar maanden was hij al terug met opvolger 'COA'. Pitchfork zei over het album: 'Loud, playful, and full of smoldering angst, the hyperpop rapper’s new album feels emblematic of the moods and textures that this scene aspires to capture.'

Glaive’s grades suffered so that his music could thrive.

Attending high school virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this restless teenage musician — now a breakout act from the internet-based scene known as hyperpop — admits he paid scant attention to his instructors’ Zoom lessons as he sat in front of a computer at his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

“It was awful, education-wise,” he says, adding that anyone listening closely enough might hear one of his teachers talking in the background of his song “Stephany,” which he recorded while technically in class. “But that’s when I started making music. So if that school year didn’t happen — if it didn’t suck as bad as it did — then who knows what I’d be doing right now?”
