In the late 1970s, many tastemakers were convinced Garland Jeffreys was on the brink of superstardom. Named Rolling Stone’s “most promising artist” of 1977, he seemed destined for the very top. That sense of promise, and what followed, forms the emotional core of ‘Garland Jeffreys: The King of Inbetween’, a new documentary about an artist who has always moved between worlds. Jeffreys’ music defies easy labels, blending rock, reggae and soul, just as his identity (the mixed-race son of a Black father and a Puerto Rican mother) placed him outside the norms of the overwhelmingly white rock scene of the ’70s and ’80s. Featuring voices including Laurie Anderson, Bruce Springsteen, Vernon Reid, Alejandro Escovedo and writers such as Jamaica Kincaid and Robert Christgau, the film offers a warm, intimate portrait of an artist who never quite fit the frame.
The screening will be introduced by photographer Jack Aarts, who will share the story behind the photograph currently used in the film’s publicity. Taken in New York in May 1980, the image gained worldwide recognition in 2025. On this evening, the original photograph will be physically present at the venue.

About Garland Jeffreys
Garland Jeffreys occupies a singular place in American music history. Emerging from New York City in the late 1960s and early ’70s, he blended rock, reggae, R&B and soul into a sound that refused to be pinned down. As a biracial artist with African American and Puerto Rican roots, Jeffreys moved through an industry eager to categorise. His 1973 self-titled debut introduced a distinct voice, but it was ‘Ghost Writer (1977)’ that cemented his reputation: poetic, sharp, and stylistically fearless. Songs like ‘Wild in the Streets’ captured the raw energy of post–civil rights New York, turning the city’s tension into anthems of urgency and resistance. Part of the same New York ecosystem as Lou Reed, Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen, Jeffreys nevertheless moved beyond the boundaries of rock. He was among the first American artists to fully embrace reggae, weaving its rhythms into his work long before it reached the mainstream. But Jeffreys’ career reflects a larger cultural shift by pushing against racial and musical boundaries at a time when labels and radio were reluctant to follow. Though he never became a conventional household name, his legacy is that of a bridge-builder: an artist who used music to connect worlds, and in doing so, helped reshape American popular music.
