Constante factor in de Amerikaanse folkrockband Fruit Bats is zanger/gitarist/toetsenist Eric D. Johnson, die ook met Vetiver speelde én sinds een paar jaar eveneens lid is van The Shins. Het duurde dus even voordat er een nieuw Fruit Bats-cd en -tournee was. Het resultaat mag er zijn: ‘The Ruminant Band’ is Johnsons meest indringende werk dusver.
